Which router should I get and do I need a router?

A question that I get quite often from people is to which router should they get and do they need one. Computer networking is not my big subject, but I can manage to some extent.

My usual answer is it depends on what you want.

Normally, I would suggest a router as they usually have some sort of safeguards built into it from preventing someone from snooping around in your computer, but having a router alone will not prevent this.

A router will have a few main functions, and the more you spend the more features you will get just like with everything else. The basic thing that it does is take a network of computers and have the ability to "link" them up so that they can have the ability to talk to each other. Most people will get the router so that they can expand the internet capabilities of their incoming internet connection so you are not bound by the old "dial up" days where one computer was connected to the internet only.

They can also provide WiFi capabilities, which is a way for wireless devices to connect to the router and gain access to the internal network that you have setup and get access to the same internet connection that you have setup.

Routers will usally have at least 4 connections on the back for the possibility of having 4 computers hooked up to it, but you can always expand the number of computers that are hard wired using what is called a switch, but that is another topic.

As for what kind of router to get if you want to get a router that is really up to what you want to do, what brands you like and what features a router has that you like. I like the cisco brand routers, but this tends to come down to the Ford vs Chevy discussion.

Then it comes down to what do you expect to do. I like to plan for the future, so I will usually get more power than I really need as bandwidth use gets higher the impact on the router get to be higher.

Some of the newer high end routers do look more like space ships than a router.

If you plan on connecting via WiFi and streaming video over it, I would suggest getting a dual or a tri-band router (here is a good writeup regarding single band, vs dual band WiFi and here is a good writeup on the difference between dual band and tri-band WiFi )and I will usually get a gigabit router. The gigabit refers to how much data the router can send and receive, but if you do not have a computer card that can handle gigabit and cables that cannot handle gibabit then it might not be worht the investment, unless you plan on upgrading your equipment at some point. Some may disagree with that and may say that getting a gigabit router is a good thing or some may say that it is just overkill.

Some other features that may be nice to have.

  • Guest access (this creates a guest network so that you can create a temporary guest WiFi network without having to give out your WiFi password)
  • Config from anywhere. I know that newer Linksys routers provide this via mobile app that allows you to configure your router from where ever you are, even if you are not connected to your network.
  • Network Map - This lets you see what all devices are connected to your network. Some routers will provide this and some dont. Others will show it in hard to find places. I have a Linksys router and it shows
  • Parental Controls - This allows you to block certain websites on all or certain devices only, and allows you to set internet blocks on certain or all devices for specified times.
  • External Storage - Some routers allow you to hook up an external hard drive to it so that you can use it for a network attached storage devices (NAS). This can allow all the members of your network to share files in a central location.

Which routers do I suggest?

That one is up to you. I like Linksys (which Cisco bought out Linksys). I have heard of others having good luck with BelkinAsus and TP-Link

If you have any sugestions or comments, let me know.

The Jason Stapleton Program - 524: Sean Spicer & Kellyanne Conway do Damage Control

This is another podcast from one of the many podcasts that I like to listen to. This one is from the Jason Stapleton Program, definately worth a listen!

524: Sean Spicer & Kellyanne Conway do Damage Control

"

My feed has been flooded with Republicans who, a week ago could not have been more critical of Josh Earnest and the White House, now defending press secretary Sean Spicer who chastised the media for lying WHILE LYING to the media.

I know our media is corrupt, and it's clear by any measure that they attempted to portray Trump's inauguration in the poorest light possible, but I find it inexcusable for the White House to then present its phony version of the truth.

For the last eight years, we've had an army of liberty activists checking the power of government. We had a counter voice to speak truth to power. I fear those voices may prove themselves to be nothing more than partisan hacks. Will liberties voice die out for the next four years now that Republicans have regained the House and the presidency? I hope not, but history suggests it will.

It's important we check our bias at the door when we evaluate the actions of our government and it is critical that he hold this administration equally accountable for it's decisions.

"Trump Spanks DOI & Other New Executive Actions01/23/2017 -

The Department of Interior is part of the executive branch and after the inauguration a DOI employee tweeted a not so nice message on Twitter about the new boss. Not a very smart career move. Especially if the new boss had a TV show where his favorite thing to say was, “You’re Fired”. But that’s […]

Gluten Free, Blueberry Pie

Blueberry pie.

Such a nice treat to have just about any time of the year, but if you are gluten free you may be thinking that you cannot have it. Well, I am going to tell you that you can.

This will work with frozen or with fresh blueberries, and if you are going to use frozen ones just double check to make sure that they are gluten free (just to make sure there are no additives for anti-caking on the berries). You will also want to rinse the blueberries off and dry them fairly well as the frozen ones tend to be extremly watery.

Ingredients:

Gluten Free, Pie crust

One of the hard things about having to be gluten free is the deserts that you miss out on.

I like to bake pies, and have always liked to bake pies but I had to quit with the addition of gluten free in my family (not by choice).

With gluten free fours more readily available (and here is a recipe for gluten free flour), here is a way to make the pie crust that you may want to use to keep some "normaility" in your life.

Note that this will make 2 crusts. If you nly need 1 crust for a custard based pie then only use half the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of gluten free flour
  • 1/2 cup of butter (or some type of shortning)
  • 1 egg (this helps bind the crust)
  • 2/3 cups or so of ice cold water
  • 1/4 tsp of Xantham gum (if your gluten free flour has it, then omit this)

Gluten Free, Keto Friendly, Fried Fish

Here is a easy recipe for some oven fried fish which is super easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cups of pork rinds, crushed intothe size of bread crumbs (These need to be gluten free in order for this recipe to be gluten free)
  • 1/4 cup of mustard
  • 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning
  • 4 5 ounce pieces of fish.

Directions:

  1. Crush the pork rinds and mix in the Italian Seasoning
  2. Preheat oven to 400ºF. Coat a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Place pork rinds in a shallow dish. Coat both sides of each cod fillet with mustard and then turn fish in pork rinds to coat. Arrange fillets on parchment paper and place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake until fish is fork-tender and coating is golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Gluten Free, Keto Friendly Home Made Ice Cream

Who likes Ice Cream? Well, just about everyone does.

It is even better when you can make it at home in a soft-serve way, to which you know exactly what goes into it.

here is a easy way to make it at home. This uses a electric ice-cream maker.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. in a large pot, combine the heavy cream and half of the Splenda, sucralose or stevia.
  2. Heat over medium heat while stirring just before it starts to boil (Do NOT let this boil or else you will ruin the cream)
  3. Once you start to see bubbles forming on the cream, remove from the heat. I will usually use a rubber scraper to stir with to make sure the bottom is getting moved around.
  4. In a mixing bowl, add the egg yolks and the rest of the Splenda, sucralosestevia or Erythritol. Using a large spoon, take some of the hot cream out of the pan and add it into the egg yolks while immediately mixing the cream and the yolks with a wire wisk to temper the eggs. Add a few spoonfuls of the cream to the egg mixture and mix to get the yolks up to temperature.
  5. Add the eggs mixture to the cream and put the stove on low. Cook this for about 10-15 minutes until the mixture has thickened up. If you take a rubber scraper and get some of the cream mixture on it and you can use your finger to make a path and the path you made stays, it is thick enough.
  6. Pour the cream mixture into a large bowl , mix in the vanilla extract and the xantham gum and cover with plastic wrap (you will want the plastic wrap to be literally on top of the cream so that it does not form a skin)
  7. Put in the fridge overnight or put into the freezer until this has cooled off significantly (the colder the better, but not frozen at this point)
  8. When it is cold enough, setup your electric ice-cream maker and spoon the cream into the electric ice-cream maker and let it do it's job.
  9. Once done, I will usually put this into a new bowl and put into the freezer for about 30 minutes as it can be extremely soft.
  10. Eat.

One side note is that this has the tenancy to turn into a block of ice when left in the freezer overnight, so it is best to make up only what you need.
